New Copyright Laws Might Make an Exception for Small Broadband Service Providers

Filed under: Lawyers Web, Online Music, Telecommunication Portal — @ 6:33 am

It is being speculated that the new Digital Economy Act, which was the last bill to be translated into legislation before the campaigning for the elections started, will create exceptions for smaller fixed line ISPs and broadband service providers.

According to the news site, The Register, the task of compiling a Code of Practice for the Act has been given to the telecom watchdog Ofcom and the Code is quite likely to have exemptions for mobile broadband service providers and small scale ISPs. It is more likely that the Code will have thresholds that will make the smaller broadband providers exempt from taking action against file sharers on their network.

It also reported that the major consideration behind the exemptions would be the size of ISPs and the affordability of compliance with the law. The law provides for strict action against users engaging in illegal file sharing or unauthorized file sharing. It requires the ISPs to help the authorities in issuing notices to the offender and take the extreme step of reducing the bandwidth or even suspending the connection of repeated offenders.

The Digital Economy Bill has been at the centre of controversies, especially with respect to the provisions that related to punishing offenders of copyright piracy. Some also pointed out that the law would mark the end of an era in broadband network, especially with respect to Wi-Fi service providers and other service providers who will be scared of being held responsible for the illegal downloads by their users.

For more information on this topic, and in fact anything broadband related, a useful resource is the Broadband Genie website, consumers can compare the services and requirements for the ISPs and mobile broadband networks; a useful resource for those requiring introductory help and worth look at for the mobile broadband payg offers - handy for web browsing on the move.

Government Report Issues Warning on Cyber Crimes

Filed under: Buyers Guides, Technology, Telecommunication Portal — @ 5:51 am

The forecast published in a document prepared by the CSoC for the Cabinet Office has raised serious concerns about the digital future. This report has been seen by the website Register which gives a bleak picture for cyber security and overall security of UK.

This Cyber Security Operations Centre has warned the government about the disturbing trend of excessive dependence of the government on the virtual world. The government is using the internet services to deliver all sorts of public services. As a result the very infrastructural support base of the country is dependent on the cyber world. Any attack on this will lead to a catastrophe because the damage will be great even if there is limited disruption in broadband access.

The report goes on to talk of a future when all wars will take place via the internet. The Cyber Security Operations centre was set up with the intention that it will suggest methods to counter the increasing threat of cyber crimes. Although the centre came into existence last year formal work will start only from next month.

It is true that cyber tools are becoming sophisticated by leaps and bounds and any country will be able to launch a catastrophic attack by hiring criminal botnets by destroying systematically the infrastructure of the enemy. The climax of the attack is that it will be nearly impossible to track theses faceless criminals.

Internet safety might be an issue for you if you’re thinking of getting broadband for your home computer. How to Get Noticed at Job Faires

Standing out at a Job Fair can make a difference in your job hunt. Job Fairs are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a San Jose Area Career Fair in January, 10 companies as showing up, and a major job search company has 82 job fairs scheduled for 2010 across the US.

How do you stand out at a Job Faire? The contention can be substantial, but you can help yourself stand out from the gang with advance homework. At AA-Careers, we have a simple 6-step process to prepare. Plan to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the organizations that are going and pick your targets. Use the World Wide Web to research the organizations that are there beforehand. Go to their sites and see if they have their jobs listed. Pick a moderate number to go after, and get ready to spend an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 7 in a day, and five or six is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring organization, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and contacts you know. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You should end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job openings on the web, read them to see what the hiring manager is looking for. Create a mapping of your achievements and skills to the demands of the job. Make the terminology match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring company.

Third, create a ‘thumbnail sales pitch’ for each likely organization/position combination. Write down a 90 second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally depicting why you are a special prospect for that job. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet people at the job booth.

Fourth, modify your resume for each opportunity. The objective on your resume should exactly match the position you’re aiming for. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job description. Especially at a Career Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be quick to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.

Fifth, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress nicely and be well groomed. Don’t over do-it (this isn’t a date!) and don’t underdress (no jeans or t-shirts, no matter how much you paid for them). Avoid strong cologne or perfume.

Finally, rehearse your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each spot - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a clearly labeled folder. Keep them in a light briefcase or folio.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Government to Tax People on Unused Landlines

Filed under: Buyers Guides, Technology, Telecommunication Portal — @ 8:17 am

The British Government has finally decided to levy tax on unused landlines to subsidise broadband in rural areas. This translates into a broadband tax of 50p per month and VAT on all lines, even if the customers are not using the phone.

According to the Treasury, all local loops including copper pair loops, co-axial cable and fibre connection loops will also be taxed. In addition, people having more than one line will have to pay for each separately.

Even lines used solely for internet access will have to pay duty from October 2010, if the Labour government retains power after the general elections.

The government consultation pointed that the charge has been formulated in a way that even those broadband users who switch over to voice over internet protocol (VOIP) services like Skype will have to pay for having a phone, even if they do not use it for making calls.

The issue of tax collection has also been resolved. The Treasury said in a statement that the charge might be added to the line rental or could be a part of the overall package cost given by customers. It could also be listed as a separate item on the bill.

The move is predicted to bring in nearly £175 million per year, which will be used to further broadband expansion across the UK and get 90 per cent of the country on the broadband map by 2017.

However, the Conservative party is against the scheme and it has announced that it will scrap the plan if voted to power in the 2010 general elections.

For information on your ISP, take a look at a dedicated broadband website for news and broadband reviews. You can check out what your broadband provider is up to, compare them with the other broadband providers, and see if you are getting the broadband speed you were promised.

A Cheap VoIP Call Can Impact Your Businesses Bottom Line

Filed under: Telecommunication Portal — @ 2:06 pm

If you are looking for a great way to save money on your phone bills, then signing up to VoIP is something well worth considering. You can avoid spending a huge amount on your phone bills using any one of a number of VoIP providers. In recent times as the speed and reliability of the internet has markedly improved, as well as decreased substantially in price, the market has seen an explosion in companies providing VoIP services to enable people to make aVoIP call.

In recent times people were restricted to having to use a fixed VoIP phone; a lot of companies have now developed VoIP applications for mobile devices. This means mobile phone users can now route there calls via the internet and save money on calls whilst on the move. Often these apps are free to download and work seamlessly with your mobile phone allowing you to take advantage of internet telephony.

The reason internet telephony allows you to save money on phone calls is because by routing the calls over the internet it allows you to circumvent the fees usually incurred by your mobile phone provider for making use of their infrastructure. This has led to a huge amount of downward pressure on mobile phone bills across the board, in what is becoming a hotly contested market place.

Since the internet have improved sufficiently to be able to transfer sufficient data so that the quality of sound is no longer affected, internet telephony has become increasingly prevalent. When internet connections weren’t as fast in the early stages of VoIP there was a slower take-up of internet telephony because of the poor sound quality when compared to a standard phone line. This has all changed however as broadband penetration increased and the cost of internet connections have gone down.

It is not uncommon to find in many modern offices that companies have adopted internet telephony as standard rather than using old fixed land lines which were much more costly. In an increasingly globalised world where international phone calls are commonplace, being able to avoid the cost of using fixed landlines can make a huge difference to a company’s bottom line.

Ofcom Introduces New Rules to Protect Customers from Mis-selling Practices

Filed under: Buyers Guides, Technology, Telecommunication Portal — @ 9:58 am

Ofcom has introduced new rules that govern the sales of mobile connections, after it receive numerous complaints of mis-selling by mobile service providers across the UK.

The mobile network operators had introduced a voluntary set of guidelines to govern the sales of mobile connections to customers in July 2004. However, the code proved ineffective, forcing the Ofcom to take measures in this regard. The new set of rules carry a stiff fine of up to10 per cent of the relevant turnover, if the companies selling mobile and mobile broadband connections are found violating the guidelines.

The new rules were proposed in March 2008, and Ofcom figures indicate that complaints fell to a low of 200 from 600 per month since then. The regulations primarily require the service providers to take responsibility for their resellers and retailers, so that no dishonest selling practices are undertaken. They place an obligation on the network operators to make sure their services are not mis-sold and ensure that the customer is provided with all the relevant information at the point of sale on everything from pay as you go mobile broadband, free laptops or contract laptops. The rules also ask companies to stay away from making unduly restrictive cashback offers.

The news should ring a relieved sigh from consumers who have long been plagued by misleading offers and cashback schemes that never yield any cash. Ofcom’s decision has put the mobile service providers to shame, although some say Ofcom’s action came late.
