The Origins of Texas Holdem

Filed under: Best Gambling, Great Fun, Web Of Games — @ 2:51 pm

Like the history of poker itself, there is significant debate about the exact origins of Texas Holdem. There are very few hard facts available to document when the game was first played or the exact rules that were used to govern game play.

The Texas State Legislature officially claims Robstown, Texas as the birthplace of this unique form of poker. While there is limited evidence to support this claim, it is accepted as part of the legend of the game that it was first played in this region in the early 20th century. Texas Hold’em reached a larger audience in 1925, when the first documented version of the game took place in Dallas, Texas.

Texas Hold’em poker made its way to Las Vegas in 1960s, when it was introduced to the Golden Nugget Casino by a small group of Texans that had learned to play back home. During this time period, the Golden Nugget Casino was slightly off of the beaten path. In a bid to attract more attention to this new version of poker, the Dunes Casino arranged for a large Texas Hold’em game for a few prominent Las Vegas figures. The publicity stunt was a success and no-limit Texas Hold’em slowly became a feature of every casino on the strip.

Texas Hold’em finally came into its own as a distinct form of poker when it became the main event in the World Series of Poker. Every year, this game attracts more and more entrants in the competition to be the world’s best player of Texas Hold’em.
